Rethinking the Origins of International Political Economy: Beyond Western-Centrism

10/10/2025

Most International Political Economy (IPE) textbooks trace the field’s origins to European and American thinkers such as Adam Smith, Alexander Hamilton, and Karl Marx. In this lecture, Professor Eric Helleiner challenges this Western-centered view, proposing a more global understanding that highlights the contributions of thinkers from other regions of the world.

Eric Helleiner is University Research Chair and Professor at the University of Waterloo. A leading scholar in international political economy, he has authored seven books, co-edited six volumes, and published over 100 academic works. His most recent books include The Contested World Economy (Cambridge, 2023) and The Neomercantilists (Cornell, 2021). He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and recipient of the 2020 IPE Distinguished Scholar Award.
